  • Development of Sacred Games began in 2014 when Netflix vice-president Eric Burmack asked Motway to create Indian content for the platform. They decided to adapt Chandra's novel in Hindi. After a script was completed, Motwan asked Kashyap to co-direct; Motwan directed the scenes with Singh and Kashyap directed the scenes with Gaitonde. Swapnil Sonavane was director of photography for Motwane; Sylvester Fonseca and Asim Bajaj filmed the scenes directed by Kashyap. In the second season, Motwan reduced his involvement as showrunner and was replaced by Neeraj Ghaywan as director. Aarti Bajaj was the editor and Alokanananda Dasgupta composed the background score.   • Sartaj Singh is a troubled Mumbai police inspector seeking recognition from a police force he despises for its corruption. He gets a call from Ganesh Gaitonde, a notorious criminal who has been missing for 16 years. He asks Sartaj to save the city in 25 days, and sets off a chain of events that plunges him deep into India's underworld. Sartaj is assisted in his journey by Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer Anjali Mathur; Flashbacks detail Gaitonde's origins and how he became a Mumbai criminal. The first season follows Sartaj as he tries to uncover clues about Gaitonde's past and learns about the connection between Gaitonde and his father.

  • Several changes were made to adapt the novel as a series. Coyle, a transgender woman, mentions in the novel passing as a dancer with whom a police officer falls in love; A constable describes Kukune Sartaj as "handsome like a Kashmiri apple". In the series, Kuku is a prominent character as Gaitonde's love interest; Malcolm Murad, who is mentioned once in the novel, has a major role as an assassin in the series.   • Netflix vice-president Eric Burmack discovered Sacred Games, a 2006 crime novel by Vikram Chandra, when the service was exploring Indian content for a global audience. Barmack called it "an interesting property" and decided to take it on board. In 2014, Netflix approached Phantom Films to produce the series; Writer-director Vikramaditya Motwane met his team during a visit to Los Angeles. Motwan had read Chandra's earlier novel Love and Longing in Bombay, which introduced the character of Sartaj Singh. After the meeting, he read the Sacred Games and thought it was "great".
