In 1983, Arthur Flack is in custody at Arkham State Hospital awaiting trial for crimes committed two years earlier. [b] His lawyer, Marion Stewart, plans to argue that Arthur has dissociative identity disorder and that his "Joker" personality is responsible. for crimes. At a music therapy session, Arthur meets another patient, Harleen "Lee" Quinzel. Lee confides in Arthur that she grew up in the same neighborhood she grew up in, an abusive father who died in a car accident and is in prison after burning down her parents' apartment building. Lee also expressed his admiration for the Joker's crimes and personality. Download Movie
During a film screening, Lee starts a fire. She and Arthur are caught trying to escape, and Arthur is placed in solitary confinement. Lee visits her mostly at night and says she is being released to escape his influence but promises to attend his hearing, and they have sex. During an interview with television personality Paddy Meyers, Arthur sings to Lee through the television screen, deepening his love for her.
On the day of the trial, Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent calls witnesses who refute Arthur's claim of insanity. During a break, Marianne reveals that Lee was actually a psychiatry student who grew up on the Upper West Side, and that her father, a doctor, is still alive. Additionally, she willingly sends herself to Arkham, checks herself in and never burns down the apartment building. When Arthur confronts Lee, she admits that her lie was an attempt to get closer to Arthur but also tells him that she is pregnant and has moved into his old apartment building to make a home for them. At the trial the next day, Arthur dismisses Marianne and represents himself. After bringing Arthur's former co-worker Gary Puddles and neighbor Sophie Dumond to the stand, Dent rested his case. Arthur, visibly moved by Gary's testimony, offers no defense, however, during his speech, he mentions the Arkham guards negatively. Returning to Arkham, he is taken to a shower room by head guard Jackie Sullivan and two guards, where he is brutally beaten before being brought partially naked to his cell. Ricky, an inmate and Arthur's friend, verbally confronts the guards, resulting in Jackie strangling him to death. Hearing this, Arthur reminisces about the aftermath of his first kill as the Joker.
During his final argument in court the next day, a devastated Arthur abandons his Joker persona, taking full responsibility for his actions. Enraged by this, Lee storms off, and the jury convicts Arthur of first-degree murder. As the foreman reads the verdict, a car bomb explodes outside the courthouse, killing and injuring numerous attendees and damaging half of Dent's face. In the chaos, two followers help Arthur escape.
