From a young age, Haruka Sakura was an outcast due to her unorthodox appearance and lack of social skills. However, the harsh treatment he received made him a skilled fighter, which he is now proud of. After getting involved in a street fight the day before her enrollment, Sakura meets a group of her future classmates. However, instead of rejecting him, they fight him, showing that the school's real concern is to protect the city of Makochi from harm—hence the students calling themselves "Bofurin". Surprised by the townspeople's support and praise, Sakura has a hard time accepting their goodwill. Despite being shown mercy by strangers to others, Bofurin must learn to overcome his discomfort while fighting formidable foes. initially treating Umamiya as the main character. However, having Bofurin's team leader as the protagonist did not progress, so he brought in Sakura to fill the role to lend an outsider's perspective on the story's circumstances. The author called Sakura his favorite character for embodying the "cool" factor he wanted to accomplish and the amount of time he put into creating her appearance and personality. He chose to give her odd-colored eyes and hair to add visual complexity and make her instantly recognizable as the main character. He compared it to a stray cat in its composition, saying that its lightness of movement and lack of body thickness contrasted with normal humans.
