Maharaja K.K. A barber by profession living in the city. He lost his wife in an accident where a truck plowed into the place where she was sitting with her daughter. Their daughter Jyoti survives the accident as a metal dustbin covers her and protects her from the falling debris. Maharaja and Jyoti later endearingly name the garbage can "Lakshmi" and they anthropomorphize her.
Maharaja later moves to a new place with Jyoti, now a teenager, and Lakshmi. Jyoti is very active in sports at school; She leaves town with her sports teacher for a sports camp. While she attends the camp, Maharaja visits the local police station to report the robbery, as Lakshmi has robbed his dustbin, much to the station's amusement. He narrates the whole incident to them saying that an armed gang attacked his house, assaulted him and took away Lakshmi.
The police initially dropped the case, as they believed they would not waste their efforts and time searching for something as insignificant as a dustbin. They ask if there was any valuables like gold in the dustbin, but the Maharaja says that the dustbin was empty. Despite his constant sleepwalking and violent threats, the Maharaja stands his ground. He eventually accepts the case after promising a bribe of ₹5 lakh to find the culprits. The police rope in Nallashivam to find Lakshmi, who turns out to be a guilty informer.
A criminal named Dhana, works at a local car garage. A local politician allegedly beat and threatened her for stealing her sunglasses. Dhana seeks revenge as he is beaten up in a local bar, Maharaja is also present. As Dhana leaves, Maharaja follows him and they stop at an abandoned factory. Two men fight over who has the upper hand on the Maharaja and who was his accomplice on the day of the robbery. Dhana tells him that one of them is inside the police station itself, and then stabs Maharaj in the leg. Before Dhana can escape on his motorcycle, the Maharaja catches him and takes him away. As the police continue to investigate the case, Nallashivam is dustbin and dented looking like "Lakshmi". To find a deliberate scapegoat, the police begin calling in thieves who take such assignments, but they scoff at the idea of being accused of petty dustbin theft. Eventually, Nallashivam agrees to plead guilty, saying he wants to try the case.
The Maharaja, who returns after the men leave, is shocked to see her in a damaged condition and takes her to the hospital. She pleads as Father Maharaja - that she wants to see and speak to the man responsible for this. Inspector Varadarajan and his fellow officers convince Perumalsamy and Kozandhai Nallashivam, now looking very upset, to spend the night at his place so that they can comfortably go to Maharaj's place to return the dustbin to him the next day. When they reach there the next day, Nallashivam confesses to his 'crime' of stealing the dustbin. The policemen force Maharaja to punish him, he proceeds to reveal that they found out what Nallashivam did, while they were investigating Dhana's death, they found his phone, in which Nallashivam had called him.
