Inspired by the incredible true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly helps a widowed father and an entire community to save the life of his terminally ill young daughter.

Ordinary Angels

Details

Set in 1994 in Louisville, Kentucky, Sharon Stevens, hairdresser and co-owner of a successful salon, finds purpose after reading about five-year-old Michelle Schmidt. The little girl has just lost her mother and needs a liver transplant as she suffers from biliary atresia. Sharon goes to the funeral, introduces herself to the family and helps her.

Sharon had been out partying and drinking the night before. Her friend and salon co-owner Rose, worried about her overindulgence, forces her to attend an AA meeting. There, Sharon does not admit her drinking problem. Later, she sees a headline about the Schmidts.

The next time she's at the salon, Sharon tells Rose that she sees this as an opportunity to help and give herself a sense of purpose. She has a 24-hour hair-a-thon to help widowed father Ed pay off his health-related debt.

Ed comes home with only a portion of what his mother Barbara ordered from the supermarket. They talk privately, and he comes clean about his huge debt. Sharon comes up with over $3,000 made for them, which is in fact half of Michelle's last transfusion cost. Invited to dinner by Barbara, she gets to know them a little better.
