Originally intended to be a feature-length film, development on the comic book series adaptation began in 2008 with the film directed by Adam McKay. Due to creative differences between the crew and the studio that picked up the film, the project was left in development hell. Development for the project was revived in 2016 by Cinemax, which announced that it would be reworked as a television series. Kripke was named showrunner for the series, while Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be executive producers. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to the series in November 2017, with production beginning in Toronto in May 2018.
The Boys is set in a universe where super powered individuals are recognized as heroes by the general public and work for Watt International, a powerful corporation that markets and monetizes them. Besides their heroic personalities, most are corrupt and self-serving. The series focuses primarily on two groups: The Seven, Watt's premier superhero team, and The Boys, a vigilante to bring down Watt and his corrupt superheroes.
