Peter is a shy, bullied eight-year-old boy who lives with his overbearing and emotionally distant parents, Carol and Mark. However, he gains sympathy from his substitute teacher, Miss Devine. Peter wants to go trick-or-treating on Halloween night, but his parents forbid him because a neighborhood girl disappeared several years ago.
Later that night, Peter is awakened by the sound of tapes coming from inside the wall in his bedroom. His parents deny these events and insist that he is imagining it. Over the next few days, Peter talks to a voice coming from the wall. The voice claims she was trapped in the walls by Peter's parents and calls them "evil". Miss Devine becomes worried after seeing a picture of Peter lying in bed with the words "Help me" and Carol advises Peter to take his delusions to his teacher.
While he was digging pumpkins, he found the skeletal remains of a child. At school, Brian, a bully, destroys Peter's prize pumpkin. Encouraged by the voice's advice, Peter pushes Brian down the stairs and breaks his leg. After learning that he has been evicted, Peter's parents lock him in the basement, where he finds a pit covered in sawdust.
She assures Peter that their parents are planning to kill him and imprison him in the front walls. His only chance to avoid sharing her fate is to kill them, which he does by putting rat poison in their food and cutting the phone lines so they can't call an ambulance. Both parents try to stop him, but are unsuccessful, Mark commits suicide by drinking poison after Peter kicks him down the stairs, and Carol accidentally stabs herself with a kitchen knife. Before Carol dies, she warns him not to "let her out."
