STORY

Using the neutral Swedish fishing trawler Maid of Honour, Guss and his companions, Graham Hayes, Freddie Alvarez and Danish naval officer Anders Lassen (the only non-British subject awarded the Victoria Cross), began a slow voyage to the Fernando Po. SOE saboteur Geoffrey Appleyard, whom Gubbins had sent forward on the assumption that Gus would be interested in including him in the team, was captured by Gestapo agents and turned over to the Nazi-controlled section of the Canary Islands for rescue. . mission Movira

Meanwhile, arriving at Fernando Po early, Marjorie and Heron use the latter's 'illegal' gambling hall to recruit backup for the Gus team while Marjorie implicates Heinrich Luhr, the SS commander in charge. After learning that the Duchess intends to depart three days ahead of schedule, Gus passes through the British naval blockade of Nazi-held West Africa, although he knows he will be arrested if his unauthorized mission is discovered. On the night of the intended raid, Marjorie and Heron discover that Luhren has fortified the Duchessa's hull despite the Italian attache's reservations. Barely warned of this in time, Gus and Appleyard decide to use them as chips to hijack the ships and moles on Gubbins' staff, after announcing the mission to senior command. Although Luhr eventually catches on when Marjorie's act begins to 'slip', the raid is ultimately successful, and Marjorie shoots Luhr in the head. The team was arrested while delivering a boat to the British fleet outside Lagos. While awaiting court-martial, they are saved and recruited by Churchill as part of his 'Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', as their actions have not only severely damaged the Nazis' naval power, but also allowed the United States , which recently entered India. The war followed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to join the European theater.

A montage of details before the final credits reveals the post-operational activities of some of the protagonists: Gus became a war hero and would lead several similar raids during the war before marrying Marjorie early in his acting career; Appleyard would receive much praise for his role in the mission, much to the King's amusement; Hayes would become a highly skilled spy who survived Nazi torture without breaking a sweat for a year; Lassen would continue to participate in raids outside the group until his death in 1945; Ian Fleming, who was part of Gubbins' inner circle during this time, would use Operation Postmaster as the inspirational basis for his James Bond novels.
