Trouble is a pampered dog who lives the good life in a mansion with his wealthy, elderly owner, Mrs. Sarah Vanderwoosey, under the watchful eye of his loyal butler, James, and famous animal trainer, Cesar Millan. One day, after his master died of natural causes, he was alone and unknown in his mansion. Claire and Norbert, Mrs. Vanderwoozee's niece and nephew, arrive to claim their inheritance. By abandoning her belongings and planning to sell other valuables, they avoid accidental and unintended trouble, to which they show immediate distaste and indifference. However, to rightfully inherit their aunt's fortune, Claire and Norbert must be willing and able to take care of the bond and trouble in the first three days, until they can sign the contract assigned to their aunt's lawyer, Mr. McBay. After pulling him out of a truck carrying his owner's belongings, and learning the truth about his death, Trouble accidentally stores a bunch of red squirrel nuts in their tree. In return, the squirrels steal his collar and run away, lost in trouble, alone and lost. The next day, at the dog park, despite some rocky first impressions, Norm and the other dogs volunteer to help with the trouble when they discover that the squirrel has grabbed his old collar when confronted again. During the struggle, Thurman finally finds trouble, accidentally robbing the leader of the squirrels, with whom he offers to make a deal - a pile of nuts in exchange for his help in retrieving trouble. After Zoe briefly leaves trouble in her apartment, the squirrels try to evict her, causing a ruckus, which results in Zoe being fired by her landlord upon her return. They use Treble's newly removed collar to track him and that too with the help of domestic dogs. Returning to Claire and Norbert in trouble at the mansion, Thurman secretly vows revenge with the help of the squirrels when the twins refuse to pay him as promised.
Mr. Mislead. McBain that they are bound for trouble, Claire and Norbert are about to claim their inheritance when Zoe suddenly arrives, revealing what really happened. Demanding his money, Thurman enters and explains the situation to Mr. McBain. After learning the truth, Mr. McBain disowns the twins. Still wanting his money, Thurman calls the squirrels to trouble him for ransom, until Snoop, Otis, and Caramel enter, following Rosie; A war happens. When trouble is caused by a squirrel leader in front of a fan, Rousey arrives in time to save his life. Before the squirrel can get out, he asks for Trouble's old collar. Trouble then lets Mr. McBay decide who he wants to be his master. Trouble happily chooses Zoe, who signs a contract allowing her to inherit Trouble, the mansion, the property, and its owner's fortune, much to the twins' disgust. He and Thurman left. Rosie is also adopted by James, much to his delight.
Zoe uses the money to revive the dog park, which is renamed the Vanderwoozy Dog Park and dedicated to both Mrs. Vanderwoozy and Trouble. She also begins to live her dream as a singer, attracting the attention of famous singer-songwriter Jason Mraz. Snoop—probably adopted by Zoe along with Otis and Caramel—proceeds to surrender trouble, much to the dogs' delight.
