Three years after her adventure with the demigod Maui and the island goddess Te Fiti, Moana spends her days exploring other islands near her home island of Motunui in the hope of finding people connected to the sea. Movira
In a vision, her ancestor, Tautai Vas, reveals why none of the people are connected: the evil storm god Nalo wanted power over humans, so he sank the legendary island called Motufetu - which connects all the islands - to the depths below. The oceanic Tautai further warns that if Moana does not find a way to raise Motufetu, the Motunui people will become extinct in the future. He gathers a team of Motunui people - the clever craftsman Loto, the historian and Maui fanboy Moni, and the sad old farmer Keke, with his pet pig and rooster, Pua and Heehi - to follow the meteorite's path across the ocean to Motufetu. Meanwhile, Maui herself is searching for Motufetu due to a previous altercation with Nalo, but is captured by Nalo's enforcer, Matangi. Maui is hesitant to contact Moana, as she fears that she will not survive if she comes to help. Moana and her crew are captured by the Kakamora, who were previously confronted by the Moana, a tribe of wild coconut-like pirates, who reveal that they were disconnected from their home island due to Nalo's actions against Motufetu. A member of the Kakamora, Kotu, helps the crew paralyze a giant monster clam that has Matangi's nest inside. When the crew finds Maui, Moana meets Matangi and discovers that she is not happy serving Nalo. She helps Moana escape and reunites with Maui and her friends, before sending her to Nalo where she is.
Moana, realizing that Nalo is trying to stop the humans from breaking the curse, tells Maui to lift it high enough to touch the island. As Maui begins to pull the island with his giant hook, Nalo strips Maui of his demigod status with a bolt of lightning. Moana, in a moment of desperation, dives into the ocean to touch the underwater island. Just as Moana succeeds, Nalo's lightning bolt kills her. Maui jumps after his body, and with a magical incantation, summons Totai Vasa and Moana's ancestors (including her grandmother Tala), who help her revive her as a goddess, Moana having received the Wayfinder's tattoo. Maui, also regaining her powers as a demigod, eventually raises Motufetu and helps Moana reconnect with the ocean. Movie Review
The crew returns home to Motunui, leading a flotilla of sea people, and a celebration is held in Moana's honor. In a mid-season scene, Nalo gets his revenge and punishes Matangi for helping Moana, while the giant crab Tamatoa arrives to join his cause.
In February 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the series had been remade into a theatrical sequel titled Moana 2, with Derrick and Schurer attached to the project. Iger explained that this came about after Disney executives saw early footage: "We were impressed with what we saw and knew it was worthy of a theatrical release" With the release of the first trailer in May, Jason Hand and Dana LeDoux Miller were confirmed as co-directors alongside Derrick, while Christina Chen and Yvette Marino were announced to replace Schurer as producers on the film.
